How often do I need to clip a chicken’s wings? So, you have recently purchased backyard chickens or created a backyard chicken’s coop and you’re starting to wonder how long your chickens will last if you don’t clip their wings? Well, the truth is, if you feed them often, look after them, treat them well, and provide a nice chicken coop for them to live and lay their eggs in, they should never run away. However, chickens by their very nature are often inquisitive and will try to explore outside their backyard. More often than not, chickens will then return when they get hungry, but exploring the outside world leads to other threats and the potential for the chickens to get injured. So, how often do I need to clip a chicken’s wing? As often as they start to feel the need to fly over the fence and go exploring.
To make sure that your chickens can’t ever fly you should only have to clip their wings once every six months. However, if you are feeding them well and they are laying, they generally lose the motivation to try to fly over the fence adn prefer to spend most of their time foraging in the backyard and digging.
I clipped my chicken’s wings over a year ago and they haven’t tried to fly over the fence since then.
When a Chicken is young, there wing feathers grow much faster and you may have to clip them every 2-3 months. However, as a Chicken matures, their growth cycles and molt cycles lengthen, you should only have to clip a Chicken’s wing/s once per year. Also, once a chicken has had its wings clipped for a while, it will become less inclined to try to fly.
